Art Online

Image

The work to promote the kids101-art gallery continues with a full review of kids101-art by Paul Vale in the Winter edition of Virtual Education. Virtual Education is published by PC World Education.

Under the "Creativity" banner of Virtual Learning, Paul Vale describes the accessibility and features of kids101-art. His conclusion, "The website is a fantastic interactive experience, where children can upload their own art to be viewed by others, but also takes inspiration from other pupils at other schools. It is also a proven resource for teachers and parents, whether it's art teachers looking for examples of creativity or parents to share with their children when working on art or craft projects at home. Make sure you make www.kids101-art.co.uk one of your bookmarked sites today."

Art pupils enjoy their very own 'You Tube'

ImageHere at kids101-art we are proud of what we do - but we are even prouder of the exposure we can give to the hard work and creativity of teachers and students.

We continue to find new ways to promote your work and this week, we are featured by the Training and Development Agency for Schools in their monthly news at www.tda.gov.uk.

The article starts:

Monthly news - Art pupils enjoy their very own 'You Tube'
These days, you don't have to be a prospective Picasso, budding Botticelli or emerging Emin to have your artwork exhibited. A new website is allowing people across the globe the chance to enjoy pieces, not from bohemian cafes of pre-war Paris, Renaissance Italy or even a grubby 1990s London bedroom, but from today's schools.

The article then goes on to say:

Already almost 700 images from 126 schools have been uploaded onto www.kids101-art.co.uk, a site that's set to become the 'You Tube' of art education.

ImageThe article includes comments from the John Thurlow from New Monument School . You can browse the schools Year 5 Walk A Line work here - or watch a slideshow.

We hope that this is only the start of a long and fantastic journey for kids101-art and schools and teachers but most importantly a journey of creativity, discovery and pride for the children who create such fantastic pieces of work.

Virtual art gallery for schools
by Pete Henshaw

Welcome to SecEd readers - below is the article that appeared in SedEd.

Celebrated artists like David Hockney and Damien Hirst had better watch out.

A new website has been launched where schools from all over the country can showcase their pupils' artwork.

More than a hundred schools, a third of them secondaries, have already registered to join kids101, and have posted stunning works of art online, from self portraits, collages and masks, through to sculpture and woodwork.

Southampton-based web designer David Channon hit on the idea for the virtual art gallery after chatting with his art teacher sister Clare.

"I thought it would be great to provide a showcase to illustrate how amazing children's artwork is," explains Mr Channon, who is planning to launch similar sites for design, literary work and music. "It's a very useful resource for art teachers too, because it offers ideas and shows what other schools are doing."

Schools themselves do not have to pay anything to join the site - revenue comes from community and corporate sponsorship.

Teachers have been hugely enthusiastic about the chance to display children's artwork.

"It's a wonderful way to show how brilliant it is," says one art and design co-ordinator. "If you have used all the walls in the school to exhibit artwork, where else is there to go? The answer is to go into cyberspace, reaching the far flung corners of the globe. It means mums and dads get to see the products of their children's art lessons too."

New Model Entrepreneurs Do It Their Own Way

Image
The Sunday Times has produced a supplement called "New Entrepreneurs" where they describe a wide range of issues that new start up businesses will encounter and how to deal with them. In the article "New model entrepreneurs do their own way", Gareth Huw Davies describes several office models and their advantages. kids101.net is representative of "The Virtual Office" model.

When contacted by the Sunday Times to participate in this review, we happily agreed to share our experiences, the advantages of managing our business wherever we can find an internet connection and the flexibility of our business structure afforded by using collaborative web technology.

The sharp rise in Web 2.0 communities has led entrepreneurs, and those who understand the technology, to search for business models that would improve the chances for real life community benefits. From this need emerged a new breed of company that embraced a virtual model of website development utilising the best web developers and the best business development organisations.

kids101.net is a collaboration between SKG IT Ltd and Webtalk Limited. These companies have come together to pool their skills, resources and energies for the development and management of exciting web sites for sharing the manifest talents of creative kids and resourceful teachers all over the UK.

We encourage all Sunday Times readers to enjoy the gallery by clicking on the ART logo. Please let us know your comments by using our Feedback pages.

CREATIVE KIDS WIN ART PADS IN ROYAL MAIL'S CHRISTMAS STAMP ART COMPETITION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Ghyllgrove Community Junior School of Basildon and Smith Street Primary School of Whitechapel, London won computer Art Pads for their entire class in an art competition to mark the 40th anniversary of Royal Mail's special Christmas stamps.

Generously sponsored by Art Pads which are great for creating art as pupils use a special cordless pen instead of a mouse to make their own drawings on a computer. The pen allows youngsters to draw, trace and write more naturally. It can even be used to improve pupils' handwriting!
For the past 40 years Royal Mail has produced a special set of festive stamps. This year is the first year that the stamps have been designed from start to finish using a computer.

Royal Mail wants to encourage the artistic creativity of children and the Art Pad does this in a fun and exciting way. Art Pad is hi-tech, but is easy for primary school pupils to use and also develops traditional drawing skills. An Art Pad can also be used to control other applications as it can be used just like a mouse, making it a versatile and user friendly input device.

There were two age groups in this competition:
  • Key Stage 1 for children aged between five and seven
  • Key Stage 2 for children aged seven to 11

The first prize per age group was 26 Art Pads - so there should be enough for every child in a class to be creative at the same time. These children can now use technology to be creative.

As there are 40 postcode areas in Royal Mail's South East Region, it was decided to award a runner's-up prize of an Art Pad for a school in each postcode area.

The competition was judged by Melanie Corfield, Royal Mail's Head of External Relations for London & the South East, Julietta Edgar Head of Royal Mail's Special Stamps and John Attree of Skill City, London First.
